Lodi, California

Book now!!
All Inclusive Lodi Wine Tour Packages
(No Tasting Fees)

Once known strictly as a grape growing district serving the major Napa Valley Winemakers, Lodi has become a world-class winemaking region in its own right. Large wineries and intimate tasting rooms are now found along the Lodi area country roads; an open secret among cognizant wine connoisseurs the world over as the secret home of some of California’s best wines – especially Old Vine Zinfandels. Zinfandel goes back to the California Gold Rush era, and in Lodi, Gold Rush EraZinfandel is King. The world’s leading vintners, entrepreneurs, consumers, and wine lovers have quickly discovered the distinctive value and quality available through the old family vineyards in Lodi. Are you ready for a California Wine Tour to visit Lodi wineries and sample their wonderful wines? Located in a rural area east of San Francisco by the Sacramento River Delta, Lodi is characterized by its warm dry summer days, cool breezy nights, and sandy soils. These conditions make this section of the California Wine regions a prime grape growing area. 18% of California's wine grapes come from this region. This is more than Napa and Sonoma combined.

Michael-David Vineyards

Like many Lodi vintners, brothers Michael and David Phillips are hardly newcomers to the wine business—or the land. For six generations, the family has farmed in this fertile Central Valley region specializing in hand crafted Rhone varietals as well as Lodi’s famous Old Vine Zinfandels. Rising from the resurgent Lodi Appellation, the winery produces some of the finest award-winning wines in California. The family has become a critically-acclaimed producer of Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah and Syrah. The quaint tasting room, café and farmer’s fresh market is a delight to visit! www.lodivineyards.com

Van Ruiten Family Winery

Van Ruiten Winery

For 50 years, the grapes grown in the Van Ruiten vineyards was harvested and shipped to other wineries every summer. The family wanted to branch out into winemaking, however, and in 1999 the first varieties of Van Ruiten wines went into production. Among the most memorable and lasting first wines was a Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz blend that remains one the families most popular today, along with the famous Old Vine Zinfandel, and the exceptional Chardonnay. www.vrwinery.com

Jessie’s Grove or Lodi Wine & Visitors Center

There is still plenty of life left in the wise, old vines of Jessie’s Grove. They’ve made it 115 years, after all. Given names like Yoda and Royal-tee, these relatively ancient vines are the oldest in Lodi—and among the oldest in the state. Planted in the late 1800’s, not long after the madness of the Gold Rush and some of the earliest plantings by the viticultural Johnny Appleseed of the California’s Central Valley—Captain Charles Weber—the vines continue to produce intensely flavored, highly prized Zinfandel and Carignane wines. Jessies GroveThe name of the winery itself, however, doesn’t refer to the vines, but to a patch of old-growth oak trees that were saved by the original owner’s daughter, Jessie. The grove still stands, and is the setting for the winery’s many summer events, including a number of local music festivals and concerts. The tasting room is a history of the town, with photos and mementos from the family throughout the generations. Interestingly, the wines are priced in such a way that with tax, they come out to an exact dollar amount (i.e.: $12.07, $13.63 per bottle). www.jgwinery.com

Vino Piazza

Vino Piazza (VEE-no pee-OTZ-uh) translates loosely as wine plaza in Italian, and is the name we have adopted to represent the group of wineries who have made their homes here. Together, the plaza has 9 independent wineries, all in this unique location. The original structure was built in 1946 for the Lockeford winery, and today, the old distillery building is used by Olde Lockeford Winery to produce wine after more than 20 years of dormancy. www.vinopiazza.com

Oakridge Winery

Oak Ridge Tasting Room

The Oak Ridge Winery is the oldest and most historic operating winery in Lodi. Founded in 1934, Oak Ridge has operated for over 70 years. Most notably known for its Old Vine Zinfandel. The Maggio and Reynolds families who purchased the facility in 2002 believe their wines should be enjoyed with good friends and family over good food and good conversation.

Berghold Vineyards or Harmony & Wynelands

The Berghold Family has been growing wine grapes in Lodi since 1986. Today, the estate is an assemblage of three contiguous vineyards totaling 85 acres of Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. After nearly a decade of growing and selling their grapes to other Napa and Sonoma wineries, the Berghold's decided the time had come to bottle and sell wine under the Berghold label. In 1999, Berghold Vineyards Syrah was born, followed in 2000 by Viognier. Today, the winery specializes in the production of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier, and also produces a Cabernet-Syrah blend, Merlot and Zinfandel. Under the direction of the Berghold’s son and winemaker, Miles, all wines are estate vintages, are terroir driven, and are made using artisan techniques combined with state of the art technology. Victorian winery owners, Joe and Kay Berghold, are collectors at heart. For nearly two decades, the couple purchased and stored antiques from the American Victorian period (1860 – 1900) with a goal in mind – to build an architecturally unique winery and tasting room representative of the era of the pieces in their collection – and the same era of beginning of Lodi wine history. That dream is now a reality in Berghold Vineyards and Winery.

Woodbridge Winery

There is no area more important to California’s wine industry than Lodi, CA…. and there is no winery more significant to Lodi’s wine industry than Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi. After graduating college at Stanford University, Robert and his brother Peter convinced their parents to purchase Charles Krug Winery in Napa Valley. The family owned business prospered, and in 1965 Robert Mondavi moved down the road, and built his own winery in Oakville. Realizing the need to create fine wines that would be more affordable for the average consumer, Robert Mondavi returned home to Lodi, and purchased a facility to create what he envisioned as “Everyday Wine for Everyday Living.” In 1979, Robert opened his operation and named his new winery after the historic nearby town of Woodbridge, California, and Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi was born.

M2 Wines

M2 is a small producer of ultra-premium wines from distinctive vineyards throughout California. The name m2 was chosen for the name of the winery because…well you’ll figure it out. The winery produces award-winning wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and several Syrah from different regions in California. M2 does not own vineyard land. They source their grapes from a variety of elite vineyards across California. This means that they can make wines from grapes that are best suited to the region in which they were grown. Cosentino Winery

Opened in 2001 by Mitch Cosentino, Crystal Valley specializes in small distinctive vineyard lots. Wines are produced from grapes grown outside of Napa Valley. Wines of this Lodi winery include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. You can also taste Napa Valley wines from Cosentino Winery at this Lodi winery. Cosentino has built a small, estate winery in the middle of a 70- to 90-year-old zinfandel vineyard. A farmhouse on the site has been converted to a tasting room and a winery production building was added. It gives the winery another bit of visibility that people can touch and feel. There's still a lot of interest from the old guard who knows them from the Modesto days. Now they won't have to drive to Napa to pick up Cosentino's wines. The Napa wines will be available in the tasting room, but the focus will be on the Crystal Valley offerings. Those are more moderately priced, at $14 to $18 a bottle, than his other brands. They aren't the cheapest, "but they can be the best in that high end category. The wines get the same Napa approach to winemaking that his other brands get, Cosentino said, which gives them a quality edge.
